PAPAKURA TOWN BOARD.

The fortnightly meeting of the Papakura Town Board was held last evening, the chairman, Mr. H. E. McEntee, presiding over a full attendance of members. Local Body Officers' Hours.—A letter was received from the Local Body Officers' Guild asking the board to institute the five-day -week for its officers. It was decided to obtain a report from the town clerk. Registering . Bicycles. ■ — The Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association wrote asking the board to bring down a by-law to make compulsory the registration of bicycles. While agreeing generally w-itfi the suggestion, it was not thought opportune to do so until all the local bodies adopted such a by-law. Papakura Cricket Club. — The local cricket club was granted the use of Prince Edward Park for the season on the usual terms. New Zealand Defence League.—The board decided to receive a deputation from the New Zealand Defence League early in November. Manurewa Water Supply.—The UnderSecretary of Internal Affaire notified the board that all possible dispatch was being given to the legislative authority enabling a contract of 21 years to be entered into with the Manurewa Town Board for the supply of water. The Franklin County Council also sent the necessary authority for the Town Board to control the water catchment area. 100-Mile Cycle Race.-—ln answer to a letter from the Auckland Centre of the Amateur Cycle Association, the chairman said it was doubtful if permission would ever be given again for cycle races to finish on the Great South Road. No. 5 Scheme. —The clerk that the new rates of pay under the Government employment scheme meant an extra £150 per annum to the board. The chairman thought the whole question should be investigated before the board decided to spend any more money in this direction and the clerk was instructed to make a report on the subject. Building Permit.—A request by Messrs. Lee Bros, for a permit to build a garage on the Great South Road in composite materials was refused. St. John Ambulance. —Upon receiving an application for a subscription for the St. John Ambulance, the chairman remarked that this was a very worthy cause and one they could support. It was decided to donate £2 2/. Rate Collection.—The clerk reported that the rate collection this year was better than other periods, over 50 per cent having already been collected.
