PUBLIC SERVANTS.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE OPENED APPEAL BY MINISTER. (By Telegraph.-—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The annual conference of the Public Service Association was opened by the Postmaster-General, the Hon. F. <fones. The Minister said the Government hoped, as far as possible, to introduce the 40-hour week in the service, but it had to be recognised that there were cases where that would be impossible. He asked delegates to consider the position of the Government when discussing their requirements. Next year the Government had to spend an extra £2,000,000 on pensions, and public servants should remember that the Government's housing scheme would bo of advantage to them as well as to the general public. The Government hoped to provide national superannuation and national health schemes, and the latter would also be of assistance to public servants.
