PAKAPOO RAID.
PREMISES IN CITY.
DETECTIVES FIND OPIUM.
CHINESE OCCUPIERS PINED. As the sequel to a raid carried out by Detectives Brady and Moore at Chinese premises in Hobson Street on September 30, two CJhinese appeared this morning in the Police Court before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. ■ Ah Chong, aged 3G, gardener, was charged with assisting, in the management of a common gaming house, while Wong Cliong, laundryman,- aged 40, was charged with using the premises as a common gaming house and also with being found in possession of prepared opium. Mr. S. Tong appeared for botli the Chinese, who pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant McHugli said that as the result of complaints received by the police a constable was instructed to visit the premises. He did so, and on three separate occasions purchased pakapoo tickets. While there he saw numbers of men enter and mark tickets. On September 30 Detectives Moore and Brady executed a search warrant on the premises and seized a quantity of the usual pakapoo paraphernalia. "This is a well-known pakapoo den," said Mr. McHugh. "When the detectives were on the premises they saw Wong Chong throw something in the fire, and they found this was packets of prepared opium. In a stove they also found opium seconds. Wong Chong is an opium addict." Ah Chong was a good worker, said Mr. Tong. Becoming ill in his market garden, he had come into the city for a rest for two weeks, and stayed with the .other Chinese. While there he helped the other man purely as a friendly act. Ah Chong gave his services gratuitously. He was a first offender so far as the Gaming Act was concerned. "Wong Chong is the owner of the concern," added Mr. Tong. "September 30 was his unlucky day, for he was, found in possession of prepared opium. Wong Choiig was fined £25, or three months' imprisonment, on each of the two charges. Ah Chong was fined £5 on the charge against him. Both were allowed time to pay the fines.
