j PAYMENT OF SHILLING. I UNUSUAL' application. I (By Tele-graph—Own Correspondent.) NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. The payment of a shilling secured the release from prison of Laurence Corrigan, a labourer, as a result of an unusual application, which was heard by Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court this morning. Counsel explained that Corrigan had been imprisoned for three months for disobedience of a maintenance order. The warrant was dated August 13 of this year, but the conviction was recorded on March 23, 1D32. Counsel considered that that was sufficient to justify the application for release. "It is unusual," said counsel, "for a man to be imprisoned on 'an order 4J years old without inquiry: into his position. He was unable to" make regular maintenance payments, which resulted in his imprisonment long after the order was made." •The ' applicant told the magistrate that he had dona his best, but had had a bad run of health. He had given the authorities all he could. ..'ln answer to the magistrate, applicant said he had not even a shilling. Counsel' came to the rescue, however, and undertook to have that paid if his client- were releksed on payment of the nominal amount. The magistrate accordingly made an order granting his release on j payment of 1/.
