STABLE AND TRACK NOTES.

CUP CANDIDATE DOING WELL. The New Zealand Cup candidate Tauramai is reported to be doing well at Riverton. fie lias had only one race in over a year, but he is one of the real stayers in the Cup, and if he survives a preparation he will have plenty of friends. PERFORMED CONSISTENTLY. Gay Talkie, who claims an engagement in the second division of the Gordon Handicap at the Auckland meeting raced consistently at Avondale. He won over a mile on the first day and finished third in the Guineas, run over a similar distance, on the concluding day. Summed up on that form, Gay Talkie will be more than a possibility if he goes to the post next Saturday. MAKING GOOD HEADWAY. Gay Brouey has done well during the short time that he has been recommissioned and is steadily fining down in condition. This gelding did a lot of racing last sen/son, being saddled up 011 twenty-nine occasions and was successful three times. Gay Broney lias always shown a fair amount of staying ability, but, taken all round, he has not readied the standard that his earlier form indicated. HILLSIDE STUD ADDITIONS. Recent foalings at Messrs. Stonex Bros.' Hillside Stud, Papatoetoe, are: Cradle Song, a colt to Vaals; Lusoma, a colt to Lysander; and Danesia, a filly to Vaals. The Cradle Song colt ranks as a halfbrother to that good sprinter, Crooning, and is stated to be a well-developed foal. The fiily from Danesia is a full-sister to Valise, whose form last season, which included a third in the Great Northern Oaks, was distinctly promising. MAY PROVE USEFUL. Count Banish lias not been required to do much fast work since coming up from the south, but lie bears a solid appearance, and should not take long to come to his best. In his training the trotter has displayed plenty of pace, but when at top is inclined to hitch, and lias broken a couple of times 011 the bends. However, the trotting brigade is not strong in Auckland and he should prove a welcome addition to the ranks of unhoppled horses. PROGRESS OF NOTIUM. Latest reports from Hawera state that Notiuni is in great heart and will fulfil his engagements at the Auckland Racing Club's spring meeting. Last week this three-year-old ran three furlongs 011 the outside of the course proper 111 37 1-Ss, which was considerably faster than any other gallop done during the morning. Notiuni figures in the Shorts Handicap 011 the first day at Ellerslie, and with only 51b above the minimum he should be in the firing line at the finish. BRED TO STAY. Nothing in the way of record breaking gallops have been required of Armacourt since she was last raced, but she is thriving on the work allotted her. Her only engagement at the approaching meeting at Ellerslie is in the Normanby Handicap, to be decided next Monday, and she is not likely to be neglected by the public. So far Armacourt lias not won beyond eight furlongs, but she is bred on sound staying lines, and later 011 may prove equal to winning over longer distances. WILL HAVE TO IMPROVE. The gallop recorded by Red Manfred oyer a circuit 011 the course proper at Ellerslie this morning is likely to gain the bay gelding additional friends for the Mitchelson Cup. It also proves that he has derived considerable benefit as the result of his two outings at Avondale. So far Red Manfred has not proved capable of winning over a mile and a half in good handicap company, and he will need to improve in order to beat the field opposed to him at Ellerslie next Saturday. HAS GOOD PROSPECTS. The ailment that prevented Mandamus fulfilling his engagements at the Avondale meeting has worn off, and he worked well at Ellerslie this morning. This three-year-old has two engagements on the first day of the Auckland meeting, having been paid up for in the Great Northern Guineas and the first division of the Gordon Handicap. So far no decision has been made as to which race Mandamus will contest, but as he is a. smart galloper his prospects will have to be considered in any race that he starts in at the meeting. YOUNGSTERS AT RICCARTON. Atalanta Lass will be the first two-year-old from J. Shaw's stable at Riccarton to race, and her first tasks will be the McLean Stakes at Dunediu. In the second division of the two-year-old parade at the National meeting she showed a clean pair of heels to the other youngsters, and she may do so again in the Dunedin classic. She is powerfully built ancj is a half-sister to that good miler Guarantee. The other two-year-olds in this stable are being taken along quietly. Tint o' Tan has been claimed as the name for the Martarma— Star Lady colt, Buillon for the Martarma —Rawene colt, and Eris Desmond for the Martarma—Lady Desmond filly. The Lord Warden—Dutch Money filly has not yet been named.

AIR FLOW SPELLING. When Air Plow reared prior to the start of the Addington Handicap on the third day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's recent August meeting she injured herself, and despite veterinary treatment she will not be able to race at the November meeting at Addington. Air Flow made a break at the start of the Addington Handicap, which was an unusual mistake for her to make, and when she tried to trot she could not move her hind legs with her usual freedom. She lost so much ground in the early stages of the race that her sanguine supporters were faced with defeat when a round had been completed. At that time many thought that the mare was suffering from an acute attack of kidney trouble, but a veterinary has since found that she had injured herself. She is making a slow recovery, and at present is enjoying the rich pasture at Roydon Lodge. Her absence from the important trotters' races at headquarters in November is . unfortunate for her <>wner, Mr. J. R. McKenzie.
