FALSE PRETENCES.

THREE YEARS' PROBATION. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, Monday. To three charges of obtaining money and goods by false pretences, John Marias Bernand Doherty, aged 24, pleaded guilty at the Police Court this morning, and was admitted by Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., to three years' probation. The charges involved the issue of valueless cheques. • '• a Detective White said accused was released from a Borstal institution on August 20 on license. He had six previous convictions. The magistrate told accused that if he abused the leniency he could expect a very salutary sentence. Doherty was ordered to make restitution of £10.
