TALLYMEN'S WORK.

CLAIMS FOR NEW AWARD

COXCILIATIOX COUNCIL HEARIXG

A new award for all workers performing the duties of tallymen at the port of Auckland"and at outports was sought in Conciliation Council yesterday before the Commissioner, Mr. R. E. Price, by the Auckland Tallymen's Union.

Assessors for the union were Messrs. H. J. Sheppard, H. B. Clark, T. Holbrook and W. . Smith, and those for the employers Messrs. W. E. Anderson, R. J. Forman, I. D. McLaren, A. Pell and W. C. Sinel.

The union proposed originally tliat [ ordinary hours of worok should be 40 per. week, worked from 8 a.m., to 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday, with a daily meal hour from noon to I'.p.m. For these hours the rate of wages for casual tally clerks should be 3/ per hour, and for permanent tally clerks £25 per month. Foreman tally clerks should be paid not less than £30 per month. Dirty, dangerous and certain other work should be paid for at an additional rate. Ordinary overtime (6 p.m. to 10 p.m. from Mondays to Fridays) should be paid for at the rate of 4/6 per hour; double ordinary time (11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Mondays to Fridays and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. oil Saturdays), 6/ per hour; and special Overtime, for extra work done- .after 12' hours' continuous duty, 9/ per ...,; .-J ■ / e The employers counter-proposed a 44hour week, said Mr. Anderson. Replying to Mr. Slieppard, he added that the Court had ,given judgment for a 44-hour week for waterside work. The Court, however, had stated that the average weekly hours, exclusive of overtime, were already well below 40 on the waterfront. After a brief discussion the union decided to accept the 44-hour live and a half-day week provided in the old award for ordinary hours of work. Following a retirement for the consideration of wage rates under these amended weekly hours, Mr. Sheppard proposed an hourly rate of 2/6. Ultimately this rate was agreed upon for casual workers, being an increase of id on the 1931 award rate, and overtime rates were also slightly increased. A number of other clauses were settled, but the question of the application of the award to permanent hands is to be referred, to the Arbitration Court.
