LOVELOCK BEATEN.

SAN ROMAN! TOO GOOD. MILE COVERED IN 4.9. CUNNINGHAM FINISHES THIRD. NEW YORK, October 4. The New Zealand runner J. E. Lovelock failed in his final assault on the world's record at Princeton University on Saturday.. Archie San Romani, a young student of Kansas College, won the event in 4.9, finishing five yards ahead of the New Zealander and 15 yards in front of Cunningham. Lovelock led at half-way and appeared to be a sure winner, but suddenly San Romani spurted and gained a lead of a yard. Near the finish Lovelock attempted his famous final sprint, but, San Romani's sprint was the stronger and he gained four yards in the last 200 yards.

This was Lovelock's third great, race in America. In June, 1933, he beat W. 8011throii at Princeton in the world record time of 4.7 3-5, which was lowered to 4.6 4-5 when Cunningham defeated the same runners a year later. Then came the "mile of the century" in 1935, which was also decided on the same track. It was contested by Lovelock, Cunningham, Bonthron and Venzke, the three lastfiamed being the leading American stars. The race resulted in a triumph for the New Zealander, surpassed only by his magnificent performance in the final of the 1500 metres event at this year's Olympic Gamp"?. He sprinted away from the field in \ 2 final lap to record the fast time of 4.11 1-5.

The career of San Romani is short, but most impressive. He finished a close second to Goix, of France, in the fourth and fastest heat of 3.54 of the 1500 metres race at the Olympic Games this year and followed this by running fourth in the final and being one of the five who broke the previous Olympic record of 3.51 2-5.
