DEVQftIPORT SHIELD. ST. LUKE'S AND GRAMMAR OLD BOYS LEVEL. KEXT CUP NEXT WEEK. Two rounds of the Devonport Shield matches were played at'Remuera on Saturday and the result of the, activities' 1 eaves St. Luke's and Grammar Old Boys level in the lead, with 12 points each. Xo doubt these teams will be bracketed and meet next week for possession of the -Kent Cup. The play on Saturday was of a drab nature, clcarly indicating that the players have had sufficient hockey. Next week will see the conclusion of the season, when the Kent Cup and Selectors' Cup matches will be played. UNIVERSITY V. SOMERVILLE. The students were first away, being held up in the circle and Somerville quickly changing the scene havl 'Varsity hard on the defence. A penalty corner was conceded, hut the ."hot was intercepted. Still pressing, Wellhourne took a. shot to strike tne side of the net. Working mainly from the left the whites gained a solid footing in 'Varsity's quarter, but the defence withstood the strain. PAPATOETOE V. SOMERVILLE. Papatoetoe were first to advance, and after a sharp attack Somerville conceded a long corner. Wellbourne initiated a counterattack, Braithwaite sending across a beautiful centre which crossed the goal-moutli unaccepted. Papatoetoe returned to the attack, Torbett, then Smytheman, having shots in quick succession, but Delaliunty cleared. Somerville advanced down the centre, the ball coming to Wellbourne, who shot from well out, then Pickup collected from the rebound from Airey's pads and flicked the ball into the net. From the bully the whites advanced again, and from a melee Pickup notched another score from close in. Ends were changed and Papatoetoe made a determined onslaught, only to find the defence too solid. Then. Somerville advanced goalwards and Pickup ■ ; added another to the goal tal!y r . Kefir' initiated an attack for Papatoetoe, passing to Elliott, who was ruled offside. Maintaining the pressure, Somerville were defending stubbornly when Torbett rushed in to snap up a chance which gave Delahunty little chance of stopping. A couple of minutes later Torbett made a nice run down the centre for Smytheman to score with a hot shot 'from well out. Somerville rallied and after a sustained attack Pickup scored with a great shot. . Somerville continued to press and Papatoetoe had some hectic moments on defence, and although Papatoetoe made a short, sharp attack, Somerville returned and were In their opponents' quarter when time was called. 'Varsity retaliated with a sharp onslaught, but were sent back md St. Luke's advanced. Alexander found the net. St. Luke's 1, University 0. The reds continued to press and Corin got a chance that he accepted. St. Luke's set the pace tipon resuming and oiily fine goalkeeping by Henderson saved the situation. Mount Eden advanced from the bully, Horspool gaining ground down the right flank. Clark had a shot, but Ireland deflected the ball over the line for a long corner. A counter attack was repulsed when Jenkins cleared with a big hit, and J. Horspool raced for the circle, but was penalised for "sticks" when he had his shot. Returning to the attack, J. Horspool sent across another nice centre, to which Clark added the finishing touches, to beat the goalie from well out. Give and take play was the order for quite a spell, neither side being ablo to finish off the attacking movement^. On changing ends, play hung in midfield until Y.M.C.A. advanced down the right, but only a penalty corner resulted. Mount Eden penned their opponents In their twenty-five, only the stubborn defence of Surman and Ireland keeping the goal intact. C. Tasker raised the siege, and the Y.M.C.A. forwards looked dangerous, but the movement broke down on the circle edge. Mt. Grammar with a combined forward movement quickly attacked and kept Mount Eden hard pressed. A breakaway by Mount Eden reached their opponents' circle edge, where Robinson stopped and Jones cleared. Grammar again attacked for v-Twigden to find the net. Grammar 1, Mount Eden 0. Grammar still pressed, and from a centre by Jerriin all Roughton had to do was to hit the ball into an open net. A rally by Mount Eden reached the circle edge only to be repulsed, and a counter-attack by Grammar ended in Twigden finding the net. ST. LUKE'S V. Y.M.C.A. St. Luke's were first to advance, Grace gaining the Y.M.C.A. circle, but only a corner resulted. After a sharp counterattack St. Luke's returned to the circle, but the defence stood up v to a prolonged bombardment. Maintaining the pressure Grace collected in theA-ircle but his shot lacked direction. St. I u.e's maintained the pace and Fenton twice in quick succession. Y.M.C.A. set up a sharp attack, but St. Luke's quickly changed the scene'and Fenton shot hard from well oirt and beat the goalie. Ends were changed and Y.M.C.A. were quick to attack. PAPATOETOE V. TRAINING | COLLEGE. Play was of an even nature for quite a spell, until Training College forced an unsuccessful corner. Papatoetoe were quick to retaliate, and, from a corner hit, Monteith found the net. Training College made a couple of sharp attacks, Lusby and Cocks repulsing the invaders ; then Torbett advanced down the centre, but his shot went wide. Training College set up a determined attack and Utting added the finishing touches to a nice effort. Again the teasliers advanced, and Papatoetoe had to concede a penalty corner. Quickly changing the scene, Papatobtoe advanced to the circle, and -Montcith flicked the ball past the goalie. On changing ends. Papatoetoe advanced to the circle and. from a corner. Torbett sent in a hard shot, which found the net. Papatoetoe set up a sustained attack, hut I lack of finish in the circle spoilt several likely chances. Again the suburbanites attacked, and. after a nice run. Torbett scored from close in. A moment later, | Smytheman netted for Papatoetoe. after a! neat piece of work. After some give-and-take play, Papatoetoe advanced to the circle, where Williams collected from a rebound off the goalie's pads and flicked high into the net.
