A.J.C. MEETING.

| TALKING WINS DERBY. j EPSOM TO C APHIS. THE PLACINGS REVERSED. SYDNEY, October 4. The Australian Jockey Club's spring meeting was opened at Kandwick yesterday in warm weather, and • before an attendance of 70,000. The track was in excellent condition.

Gold Rod, who was considered to liold a mortgage on the Derby, failed to stay the distance, and was beaten into third place. The race commenced sensationally, several horses colliding at barrier-rise. Momentarily a grave smash appeared imminent when Shakespeare fell, but the rest of the field raced away unharmed. Talking was the early pacemaker from Gold Rod and j Mala. Passing the mile Gold Rod ran to | the front, with Mala in close attendance. They ran in that order to the turn, where Mala supplanted Gold Rod, and appeared likely to go on to victory, but Talking, finishing with rare determination, worried the New Zealand colt out of the prize. The Epsom Handicap was marred by an unsatisfactory start, and later by interference in the straight, which cost the winner, Gay Lover, the race. Spearmeta raced away in the lead at barrier-rise from Black Laughter, Gay Lover and ■ Capris. Turning for home Gay Lover, Black Laughter and Capris were promin- | ent. Capris took charge at the distance and was immediately challenged by Gay Lover. In a desperate finish Gay Lover I passed the post with a head advantage, but lost the race 011 account of interference in the straight. Silver Ring gave a splendid exhibition of his galloping ability in the Spring Stakes. Running in third position most of the way, he took charge a furlong from the post, and passed the judge with a length to 6pare. His performance greatly pleased his Metropolitan admirers. Sporting Blood enhanced his Metropolitan prospects by finishing with great dash to secure third. Results: — FIRST HURDLES of £200. About two iniles.
