GREAT RESPONSE.

AMBULANCE APPEAL. OVER £1000 RAISED. ANNUAL STREET COIXECTTON. "Over £1000 ... it is great to know that the public has confidence in the work of the association/' said Mr. S. E. Lancrstone, secretary-manager of the Auckland centre of the St. John Ambulance, when commenting this morning on the result of tlie annual street appeal for funds which was made yesterday. "The teams of women who carried the work through in the city and suburbs yesterday are.to be congratulated,.particularly the Mayoress, Mrs. Ernest Davi?,"' added Mr. - Langstone. "There are still a few returns to come, but it is certain that the final figure will be just over £1000." The manager stated that approximately £3000 was needed for the annual maintenance of the service and to have a third of that provide-} by the street appeal was beyond what had been expected and, he thought, without precedent. An analysis of the coins collected showed the usual interesting array. The fact that the American liner Mariposa was in port was evident in the number of American coins that found their way into the collection boxes, dimes and dollars and even "greenbacks," or dollar notes. There were also French, Japanese and other currency one token bearing the inscription "loaned for amusement only." A feature of the collection was the amount collected by a boi-carrying pony which had been lent for the occasion by the loca\ representative of the returned soldiers' publication "Fernleaf." The final sorting out was interesting. It revealed £49 worth of halfcrowns, £87 worth of flor'.ns, and £272 worth of shillings. The collection also included 8000 sixpences. £28 worth of threepenny pieces, £28 in pennies and £2 10/ in halfpennies. -Mr. Langstone is particularly grateful to five revenue officers from the Auckland Transport Board, who spent three hours last night sorting the proceeds of the collection and working out the grand total.
