PAKAPOO CHARGES.
RAID IN HOBSON STREET. • vi. .... * - ' TWO CHINESE FINED. As the result of a raid carried out by Detectives Moore and Hayes on August 25, two Chinese appeared in the Police Court this morning. All Cliing was | charged with that, being the occupier, he used pfemises at 176, Hobson Street, as a common gaming house. Chang Lu. was charged with assisting liim in the management of a common gaming house. llr. J. F. W. Dickson appeared for both Chinese. Evidence was given by Constable Prestage as to visits he made to the premises, when he bought pakapoo tickets. Two he bought from All Cliing and one from Chang Lu. Detective Moore's evidence was that the place was exclusively used for the sale of pakapoo tickets, no lawful busi•ness being carried on there. Witness and Detective Hayes executed a search warrant on August 25 when Chang Lu and three Europeans were found there. A quantity of pakapoo material and a sum of money was seized. Later, Constable Prestage identified Ah Cliing as the man who sold him tickets. Mr. Dickson submitted that only Chang Lu was charged when the case first camc before the Court. But he was not the occupier. All Cliing was the real occupier. "Chang Lu is a sick man, unable to work and he merely hangs about the premises earning a few pence by selling tickets," added Mr. Dickson. Neither Chinese had been in trouble previously. Ah Cliing was fined £25 and costs 10/, while Chang Lu was fined £2 and costs. The former was allowed one week in which to pay.
