SURGEON TO ROYALTY.

NEW ZEALAND DOCTOR. (Received 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, September 1. The New Zealander, Dr. A. E. Porritt, lias been appointed Surgeon-in-Ordinary to the Duke and Duchess of York.

Dr. Arthur Espie Porritt was born in Wanganui in 1900, the son of Dr. E. E. Porritt. He was educated at Wanganui College, and later went to Otago University. Awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1923, he took up residence at Oxford and gained his B.A. degree. He has since gained the degrees M.8., 13.Ch. .(Oxon), M.R.C.S., L.R.C.F. (Lond.), F.R.C.S. (Eng.). Besides a redoubtable record as a scholai", he put up a number of fine performances on the running track, where he was definitely of world class. At the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris he gained third place in the 100 metres sprint, and •at the 1928 games in Amsterdam he captained the New Zealand team. He still holds the Oxford-Cambridge University record for the 100 yds sprint (9 4~55), which he established in 1926. He has written 'Athletics" in collaboration with D. G. A. Low, and hag had several articles on medical subjects published in "The Lancet" and the "British iVJedical Journal." At the last Olympic Gaines he acted as manager of the Dominion team.
