"DYNAMITEROS" HOLD UP REBEL ATTACKS.

GAPS IN RAMS

Wave After Wave Repulsed , At Irun.

HEAVIEST DAY'S LOSSES. United Press Association.—Copyright. (Received 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, September 1. Artillery bombardment and air bombing' of Irun, northern Spain, this morning did not dislodge the Government forces from their positions. Still another desperate rebel effort to capture Irun failed. Shelling and bombing from sea, land and air continued all day, but when the barrage eventually subsided the rebels had little to show for their vast expenditure of ammunition. Wave after wave of rebels was checked by deadly Government fire, and Irun is still awaiting the shock infantry attack which the all-day bombardment heralded. To day's casualties at Irun are probably the most severe so far. The rebels lost more heavily than the defenders. Government troops brought up their "dvnamiteros," dare-devil miners equipped with improvised dynamite bombs, who caused devastating gaps in the rebel ranks. Throughout the day bullets whizzed over French territory. All roads across the frontier are closed. The rebels while maintaining their pressure on San Sebastian, have resumed intensive aerial bombing of Fort San Marcial, on the Irun front. The Government has retaliated by bombing the insurgents' headquarters at Burgos. Jin connection with the rebels' offensive toward Madrid, two columns aggregating 20,000 men are marching through the province of Estremadura and approaching Toledo. The Government admits the advance, but is confident of stemming it, for which purpose it is pouring in troops from the western side of Toledo. The situation on the Guadarrama front is still static. REVOLT IMMINENT? Moroccans Resent Harsh Rebel Treatment. JEWS PENALISED. (Received" 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, September 1. Messages from Casablanca say that events confirm reports of disaffection among the natives in Spanish Morocco, where a rebellion is believed to be imminent against General Franco, Whose repressive measures have caused chiefs to refuse to supply 25,000 recruits demanded within a week. Chiefs sent a deputation to the Sultan to protest against Spanish severities and to demand release of the imprisoned chiefs, Abd el Alek and Torres. Fifteen hundred wives of soldiers sent to Spain have arrived at Tetuan and demand nows of their men folk and sustenance. Jews are being fined, or in default, sent to prison to meet General Franco's administrative expenses. GERMAN EMBASSY. REASON FOR LEAVING MADRID (Received 10 a.m.) BERLIN, September 1. It is explained that the German Embassy has been moved from Madrid to Alicante on the grounds of the growing insecurity in the capital aijd the failure of the Spanish Government to provide adequate protection for the Embassy. The Embassy in Madrid was imperilled owing to the unreliability of the "Red militia which is superseding the guaid of the regular police and troops. The Spanish Government, replying to the German protest, says it is unable to supply. police because none are available. The "Borsen Zeitung" declares that this is characteristic of the Government s general situation. CHURCH MONEYS. £1,500,000 CONFISCATED. V (Received 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, September 1. Madrid police arrested a banker, Senor Luis Muguiro, and confiscated £1,500,000, of which he was trustee on behalf of religious organisations. The people's tribunal, sitting in the model gaol, continues sentencing to death and terms of long imprisonment, officers of the Carabanchel garrison, outside the city., who revolted.
