POLICE OPPOSE RENEWAL
APPLICATION DISMISSED. An application by the police to liavo the license of the Hobson Hotel, held by Peter Frederick Hall, terminated was heard by the Auckland Licensing Committee at the adjourned annual meeting this morning. The chairman, Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M.. presided. Subrnspector Hall appeared for the police and Mr. Terry the licensee. Sub-Inspector Hall said that because it was suspected that after-hour trading was being done by Hall observations were made bv the police, and as a result Hall had been convicted twice during the past six months. In May he had been lined and in July 20. Hall had not actually supplied liquor on the premises to persons after hours, but had supplied it at tbe door to persons who called. Evidence bearing out the sub-inspec-tor's statement was given by three sergeants and a constable. The chairman said the committee was satisfied that after-liour trading had been carried on, but since the conviction in July the house had been well conducted. The magistrate who had heard the evidence had not thought it warranted the license being endorsed, but had imposed the maximum fine on the second occasion. The defendant had been already punished and the application would be dismissed. There being no oojection, renewals or transfers were granted in the following cases:—lmperial Hotel. Ernest Montgomery; Queen's Ferry Hotel. Benjamin Davidson; Criterion Hotel, Frederick William Gardes to Walter Henry Cutlibert; Freeman's Hotel, from William James Bates to Edward Arthur Wilson; Bising Sun' Hotel.
