NEW TRAWLER.

ENGINE INSTALLED.

BIG LIFT FOR CRANE.

WEIGHT-GUESSING CONTEST.

A new trawler was launched from Bailey's yard on Monday evening and named Waiwera. Yesterday she was taken under one of the Harbour Board's cranes on Queen's wharf to have her heavy Diesel oil engine lifted in. The trawler was built for Waitemata Fisheries, Limited.

The engine is of two cylinders, and of 00 h.p., and many guesses were made as to its weight, ranging from 3cwt to three tons. Mr. J. Allely, who was supervising the job, settled this point. The engine as hoisted in weighs just over 3i tons, and when completely installed with shafting, etc., will be four tons.

The first cost of a Diesel engine is more than that of a petrol motor, but its economy of running in a trawler or trading vessel is a compensating factor. In Great Britain and America Diesels are extensively used in fishing vessels and are gaining favour for large pleasure craft.
