CITY AIRPORT.
DEVELOPMENT PLAN.
STATE ASSISTANCE SOUGHT
PROPOSAL BY MAYOR,
"Consideration is being given hy the Government to a proposal which I submitted to Ministers in Wellington last week, for the co-operation of the State in tlie development of the proposed Point England airport," said the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, in a report to the City Council last evening.
"When in consultation with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance, I explained that the proposed airport, apart* from its necessity to the future progress of commercial aviation in Auckland, was a medium for the employment of labour, the estimate made tentatively being for approximately 200 men. After expert examination and analysis, tlie site had been found to be the most suitable available, and the council was anxious, when finances permitted, to proceed with the scheme. In view of the national character which such an airport would assume, I asked the Ministers to consider the proposition that, in. tlie event of the council purchasing the land, the Government would carry out the work of development.
"The Minister of Finance intimated that he . would take time to look into the proposal and communicate with me later," said Mr. Davis. "I indicated that, pending the Minister's determination of the question, I would proceed with the inquiries which I had arranged to make with the object of ascertaining the extent to which metropolitan support for the scheme, as originally proposed, would be available in Auckland."
The report was adopted.
