OBITUARY.
MR. A. T. PALMER. I Mr. Alfred Thomas Palmer, who died at Epsom in his ninetieth year, arrived !at Lvttelton with his parents in 1808. In 180(5 lie, visited Wanganui for the first time and was then attracted to the Thames goldfields. He joined the Armed Constabulary in Auckland in 18/18 and served as a trooper for six years. He was .stationed at. Wanganui. New Plymouth and the White Cliffs. He was also a member of the expedition sent against Te Kooti at Ngatapa, Poverty Bay, where the rebel leader and his followers escaped over a cliff by means of flax ropes. In 1874 Mr. Palmer settled in the Pa tea district, where he bought a large area of land on the Whenuakura block and farmed it successfully for ■ many years. He was chairman of many local bodies during his lifetime. He married in 1878 and arrived by steamer at Wanganui with his bride, who was a daughter of Mr. Thomas Merry, of : riiristchurch. Mr. Palmer retired to . Auckland 20 years ago. Mrs. Palmer died , last vear. and of a family of nine he is survived by three sons, Harold and Percy i (Patca) and Charlie (Levin), and ■ four daughters. Olive (Newcastle, Ausi tralia), Mrs. G. M.
