WHITEBAIT SCARCITY.
PROTECTIVE MEASURES. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Brief reference to the growing scarcity f whitebait was made .in the House ol tepresentatives to-day when the Marine )epartinent's estimates were under con ideration. Mr. C. Morgan Williams (Government laiapoi) asked the Minister of Marine Ir. Fraser, what was being done to proect the spawning grounds, which were rampled on by cattle and by people uring high spring tides when the ova ras lying in the grass and reeds. I he Minister said the question was not ieing overlooked. It might be necessary o limit the season. There were demands or a shorter season from various parts f the country. The only way to preent cattle trampling on the ova would e to fence off the areas.
