NEW HOURS FIXED. DECISIONS BY RETAILERS. CHANGES NEXT WEEK. A number of changes have T>een made in the hours to be observed by retailers in various industries, following the introduction of the labour laws fixing shorter hours of work for shop assistants and others. These hours will operate from Tuesday next, September 1, and as in most cases they have been fixed I following conferences among employers j they will apply generally. ,| Owing to the fact that some .bakers J and pastrycooks maintain confectionery shops and that most dairies also sell . bread and other such supplies there has . been as yet no decision regarding the I hours to be observed in this trade. It P is anticipated, however, that the larger \ bakeries will observe regular hours. s Several of the larger firms this morning stated that their hours would be to a certain extent reduced, but that on the u whole the hours for assistants would be ' arranged by the engaging of extra [ assistants and the working of shifts. . f So far as is at present known, the • hours to be observed by bakers and 1 pastrycooks will be as follows: —Mon- [ day to Thursday (inclusive), 9 a.m. to . 5.3*0 p.m.; Friday (late night), 9 a.m. to . 9 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. : Drapers And Others. The hours to be observed by grocers '■ in the Otahuhu district are somewhat ; different to those fixed by the city firms. ' The hours to be observed in that dis- ■ trict are as follows:—Monday to Thurs- ' day (inclusive), 8.30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday (late night), 8.15 a.m. to 8.30 p.m.; Saturday, 8.15 a.m. to 12 noon.
