BILLIARDS.

AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS.

HOLDSWORTH DEFEATS HACKETT

The second semi-final of the Auckland Provincial Amateur Billiards Championship for the Billiards Limited Shield, was played last evening at Messrs. Billiards Limited showrooms. L. F. W. Holdsworth, the New Zealand champion, and W. E. Hackett, again attracted a large gathering. Holdsworth was in excellent touch at the outset, and played attractively in an all-round break of 70, just missing a cushion cannon when he appeared set for a much larger break. A few cues later Hackett ran up to 22 before failing, being unfortunate in losing the white when going well. Both were scoring freely, and twenty odd breaks were frequent. Holdsworth gathered the balls at the top end of the table and registered a neat effort of 32. He showed up well again 600n after by making a run of 25 off a double balk leave by his opponent. Hackett added to his total a run of 26,. and at this stakfe Holdswcirth was leading at 258 to 1(52. Hackett, who was playing a good tiphill game, registered a nice all-round break of 41, and made up some of the leeway. The Dominion champion, however, still held the lead at 378 to 303. The balls were breakbadly for both players at this stage. Hackett made a determined effort over the concluding stages of the game, and earned applause by making a splendid allround break of 64. Play was exciting over the final stages of the game, Holdsworta eventually winning by 35 points. The final scores va*e: L. W. F. Holdsworth 500 (best individual breaks 70, 37, 32, 20, 24); W. E. Hackett 465 (breaks 22, 20, 27, 27, 41. 64). The first session of the final between R. Carrick and L. F. W. Holdsworth will commence to-night at 7.30.
