SATURDAY WORK.

COURT'S DECISION. THREE TRADES AFFECTED. CLOTHING, BOOTS. TIMBER. Decision was given by the Arbitration Court this morning concerning Saturday work in the clothing manufacturing, boot and shoe manufacturing, and the sawmilling, boxmaking and timber yard industries. The Court recently gave its judgment fixing a 40-hour week for the three industries mentioned, but reserved the question of Saturday, work. Referring i to the boot and shoe manufacturers, the! Court states that in the case of wholesale manufacturing houses, Saturday work must be eliminated. In the case of staffs in workrooms attached to, or working in conjunction with, retail establishments and engaged in making adjustments, alterations or repairs to boots or shoes, or making bespoke boots or shoes, Saturday work will be permitted. "The general view of the Court is that in the case of staffs in wholesale manufacturing houses, Saturday work should j be eliminated, and that in the case of j staffs in workrooms attached to or ;- working in conjunction with retail :. establishments, Saturday work should ? be permitted," states the Court's deciy sion. "The problem presents some diffi- ' culties by reason of the wide difference in the circumstances of individual busiI nesses. Beyond expressing the above 9 general view, the Court makes 110 positive order eliminating Saturday work, 1 and leaves it to each firm to carry out s the 40-hour week on five days or on 5J 1 days, as seems best suited to its individual circumstances." "Saturday work will be permitted in boxmaking factories and also in timber yards in respect of kiln-drying attendants and employees required for the supply of dunnage for shipping," reads the decision in respect of that industry. "As to bush sawmills, since time may be lost through adverse weather conditions, we think that the right to work on Saturdays may be desirable," said the judgment. "For the present we make an order permitting Saturday work, but we reserve to the parties the right to ; bring up this question of Saturday'work in bush sawmills for review at their next conciliation council proceedings."
