ONIONS FROM AMERICA.

ARRIVAL BY THE MARIPOSA.

"COAL TO NEWCASTLE." The Auckland produce market has been oversupplied for some time with onions from Pukekohe, Japan and America.' Prices have been forced to an unusually low level for the time of the year, lower in fact than that ruling at the flush of last season. Now 3595 more bags of 1001b each have arrived by the Mariposa from California. The cost of transport, Customs and all incidental expenses will be greater than the total cost of local onions, so that merchants who have imported them- fear, they will lose heavily. . , v '' ' The quality, of course, is far superior to that of locally grown varieties, which have been kept in ! cold storage, and the dealers hope to get from 14/ to 17/ per 1001b bag for chem. Local onions bring only 8/0 per cwt.

The reason they ordered so many from abroad, say the Auckland dealers, was that they expected the local supplies to be exhausted by now. This has not happened because of large quantities coifting from Pukekohe, which have kept better than was anticipated.
