ARBOR DAY OBSERVED.

GATHERING AT MEADOWBANK. Arbor Day was observed at Meadowbank School on Wednesday, when a large number of native treeg were planted by the pupils. There was a good attendance of parents and friends, who were welcomed by the headmaster, Mr. J. F. Roberts.

The gathering was presided over by j Mr. R. T. Hookham, chairman of the j school committee, who addressed the assemblage on the significance of Arbor Day. Addresses were also given by Mr. Campbell, Conservator of State Forests, and Mrs. P. D. Wright, convener of the ladies' committee. A pleasing feature of the proceedings was a series of lecturettes given by the pupils. "History of Arbor Day" was dealt with by R. Tizard, "The Rimu Tree" by B. Donald, 1 and "The Kauri" by B. Lovatt. P. Lawson also spoke on the care of trees. Variety was added to the programme by the rendering of two recitations, "Trees," by P. Grubb, and "To the Kauri," by J. i Preest. I
