MOTOR INSURANCE.
TOO MANY ACCIDENTS
COMPANY DIRECTOR'S VIEWS
Speaking at the annual meeting of the Xew Zealand Insurance Company today, the chairman of directors, Sir James Gunson, said:—
1 "One of the most difficult sections of our business to-day is motor car insurance under both comprehensive policies and third party covers. The increasing-number-of accidents in all countries is so serious that the problem is engaging the close attention of Governments. Awards under third party legislation in Xew Zealand are becoming increasingly heavy, and we feel justified in saying that in many instances accidents arise from recklessness and disregard of other people's lives and property. | "As ail insurance company it is our j business to give adequate cover at reasonable rates for legitimate risks, i This we have always done, and are still prepared to do. But now that we are faced with the irresponsibility which is so noticeably developing on the part of a number of motor car operators, - the I situation calls for corrective measures. llt is only by prompt action in such matters that the soundness of our position can be maintained and the public generally protected. i "The financial burden of this state of affairs falls ultimately upon the shoulders of the motoring public, the I majority of whom have careful regard for the regulations. It is to be hoped . that the authorities will soon bring into force some measures which will have i the effect of materially reducing the I number of accidents."
