SEQUEL TO ACCIDENT.
NEGLIGENT DRIVER FINED. In the Police Court at Otahuhu yesterday Robert Sinton (Mr. Holmden) was charged with negligent driving. Sergeant Cahill stated that Percival Hill, a nightwatchnian at Westfield. was riding his motor cycle along the Great South Road about G p.m. 011 the evening of June 13. Hill stated that he had put out his hand to signal that he was going to cross the road and had begun to cross when Sinton ran into him and knockcd him down.. Hill said that he was going at 15 to 20 in.p.h. coming up the road and was slowing down just before he reached the turn-off. He had looked behind and seen a car about 150 yards away and had put out his hand and kept it out while he travelled about 20 yards and had then crossed over. He had just reached the middle line when he was knocked over. Several other witnesses gave evidence of seeing Hill put out his hand, and as to defendant's statements after the accident. Sinton stated that he was watching Hill in front of him and was positive that he had given no signal to indicate that he was going to turn off. He himself was going at about 30 miles per hour and had pulled out to pass Hill when the latter had run into him. Remarking that he held a strong opinion that if a man is crossing a stream of traffic he does so at his own risk and that if Hill had been brought before him he would have fined him, too, the magistrate fined Sinton £1, plus costs £2 14/.
