DROVER CHARGED.
ORDERED TO PAY COSTS. In the Police Court at Otahuliu yesterday. before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., Jack Elliot (Mr. Fee) was charged with driving sheep 011 the Great South Road, such being a prohibited route for stock. Inspector Breed stated that- he caught defendant driving the sheep on the Great Soufii Road, and when lie spoke to him defendant informed witness that lie could not stop him. Defendant had been fined for a similar offence with cattle in March last. 111 answer to Mr. Fee witness admitted that he had not- heard of a conviction for driving sheep in the past 10 years. He admitted that lie knew other mobs of sheep were driven along here, but stated these were from paddocks on the Great South Road in the Town Board area. Mr. Fee said that the by-law had been in existence for over 10 years, but it was never enforced, as apparently members of the Town Board realised it was a hardship for sheep to use the detour, which would entail a journey of four miles, as against one mile along the road. Adam Collie, a sheep farmer, of Manurewa, stated that ho had been driving sheep through to Westfield for over 50 years, and had never once gone off the South Road. deviation was in a bad condition and lorries kept on the metal and forced the sheep into the mud. ITe had even passed the inspector with a mob of sheep and had not been stopped. In fact, he had brought GOO or 700 sheep through this winter. Inspector Breed: You have never passed me within the Town Board area, or else you would have been here in Court also. Stating that it would bring the matter to the notice of drovers, the magistrate convicted Elliot and fined him 10/.
