EATING MORE BUTTER.
LESS MARGARINE USED. DIET OF BRITAIN'S MILLIONS. An increase in the per capita consumption ill' Great Britain of many commodities is revealed in a tabic compiled for "Barclays Bank Review." Comparison of per capita consumption in 1934 with that of 1929 and 1913 is as follows: —- 1913. 1929. 1934. Butter, 11) 9.90 15.38 23.02 Margarine, lb 3.71 3.32 0.05 Cheese, lb 5.48 7.26 7.10 Meat ami flour, lb .. 258.69 271.59 244.08 Kggs, number 56.25 64.99 48.08 Beef, lb 21.96 28.11 27.84 Mutton, lamb, lb ... 13.05 13.99 15.90 ■Pork, lb 1.21 1.81 3.44 Bacon, hams, lb .... 13.68 21.90 20.05 The 1913 figures included the Irish Free State. A striking change noted is the rise in the quantity of imported butter and the accompanying fall in margarine, combined with the fact that the total of these two products nearly doubled between 1913 and 1934. The growth in consumption of butter has been encouraged by the fall in prices. It is noted that while tea consumption in 1913 was 6.691b, in 1934 it lose to 9.221b. Beer consumed in 1913 was 27.86 gallons a head; in 1934 it had fallen to 10.82 gallons. Potable spirits in 1913 were 0.70 gallons a head, and dropped to 0.21 gallons in 1934. The bank points out that no definite conclusions can be drawn from the figures, as they relate to only a limited range of articles, and, in most cases, do not cover domestic production, but they do suggest a distinct increase in consumption in many categories compared with 1913.
