NEWMARKET BOROUGH.
LIGHTING SCHEME AND FLATS A deputation from the Newmarket Business Association waited on the Mayor and councillors last night at the Newmarket Borough Council meeting, soliciting the support of the council with regard to the community lighting scheme. Mr. C. S. Craig, who spoke for the deputation, said that the scheme embraced the portion of the street from Broadway West to the Bank of New Zealand, and from the corner o? Remuera Road to the Royal George Hotel. Whole-hearted support had been received from the majority of the shops concerned, with only two or three exceptions. Regret was expressed that the Auckland Savings Bank had declined to take part in the lighting scheme, but on the motion of Mr. Geddes it was decided to send a deputation to the head office of the bank in an endeavour to secure tlieir support.
The council decided to proceed with the community lighting scheme, and to irive it their support, since it would be beneficial to the business community and to the ratepayers. In view of the acute housing shortage, a proposal is under the consideration of the council to erect a block of flats at the foot of Sarawai Street, 011 a site to he purchased from the Molanesian Trust Board. The suggested building would contain 12 flats, consisting of two bedrooms, a livin™ room, a kitchen and a bathroom.. Each of the flats would be fitted with numerous laboursaving devices and conveniences. The building would be constructed of briok and reinforced concrete.
The object of the council is to erect flats for workmen at a suitable rent, definitely not to embark upon a private enterprise. It is the opinion of the council that rents for workmen are much too high, and so it is their endeavour to encourage this type of building.'
