ASSAULT AT BANK.
POINT CHEVALIER AFFRAY
BUSHMAN FOUND GUILTY. A verdict of guilty on the major charge of attempting to render a Point Chevalier bank official, J. G. Worboys, incapable of resistance, with the intention of committing theft, was returned by the jury yesterday evening at the trial of James Billing (Mr. Sullivan), bushman, aged 39.| There were alternative charges of assault causing bodily harm and common assault arising out of the attack on Mr. Worboys with a piece of lead piping on the afternoon of May 14. The defence raised was that Billing was so affected by drink, which aggravated a chronic injury to his nose, that he had no recollection of the happening. In returning its verdict the jury added a strong recommendation to mercy. Mr. Justice Fair deferred sentence.
