ROAD SAFETY.
MOTOR VEHICLES BILL.
NO BICYCLES REGISTRATION". (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Keporter.) WELLINGTON. Wednesday. Amendments proposed by the Minister of Transport, Mr. Semple, to the Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill provide for the deletion of the registration of bicycles, the Government not being convinced that the expense and inconvenience of such registration would be justifiable by the benefits that would accrue. Periodical examination of motor vehicles at a charge not exceeding 5/ is provided for, ami by this means it is hoped to make the necessary improvement in the mechanical condition of the motor vehicles using the road.
Control of hours of work of drivers of motor lorries used for commercial purposes is provided for, the dual purposes of this being to increase road safety and to protect the health of drivers. There is already provision for the control of driving hours in the case of those vehicles which arc licensed under the Transport Licensing Act, and the effect of the-amendment is to enable such provision to be extended to ail i motor lorries used commercially. A new clause has been added giving anybody the right to obtain particulars from a post ofliee of any registered motor vehicle at a cost not exceeding 1/. This will enable prospective buyers of used motor vehicles to obtain particulars of the occasions on which a vehicle has changed hands.
