BASKETBALL.
QUEEN CARNIVAL. FUNDS FOR REP. TEAMS. Basketball, although not much in the public eye, is gaining in popularity year by year and tends to soon become, if not already, the leading winter sport for girls in New Zealand. Alii Mated to the Auckland Association are over 1000 members, while the 1935 official figures for the Dominion show an increase of 527 teams (approximately 4793 players) since 1930.
Auckland successfully held the New Zealand Cup for six years in succession, but lost to Otago at Invcreargill' in 1932, regaining it at Gisborne in 1933 and losing to Wellington in 1934. that association again being victorious in 1935. This year the New Zealand tournament is being held at Christchiirch, and record entries from all parts of the Dominion are expected.
For the purpose of sending a senior representative team to Christchiirch and also representative teams in lower grades to other centres, a queen carnival is being organised. For this purpose the teams in the Auckland Association have' been di.ided in three sections, each of which las elected a queen. In the first section Miss Joan llorspool, or the Killarua Club, lias been elected, while in the second section Miss Hazel Switzer. of the A.B.C. Stores Club, has been chosen, and for the. third section Miss Millie Allan, of Greer's Club, is the nominee.
It is hoped at the close of the carnival to have sunlcTent finance in hand to cover the cost of travelling expenses in all grades toward the end of September.
