AUSTRALIA WINS.

DAVIS CUP DOUBLES. Crawford and McGrath Beat German Pair. QUIST OUT FOR THE MATCH. United Tress Association. —Copyright. (Received 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 20. In the doubles of the Davis Cup inter-zone final, at Wimbledon, J. H. Crawford and V. B. McGrath (Australia) beat G. von Gramm and H. Henkel (Germany), 6—i, 4—6, 6—4, 6—4. Adrian Quist will take no further part in the match against Germany. McGrath plays Henkel to-morrow in the singles, in which Quist was originally drawn. Light rain commenced during the knock-up before the doubles, only 2000 people being present. Quist was on crutches, and his ankle is severely swollen. Henkel did not look quite fit. McGrath also was out of touch in the first set, but breaking through Cramm's service the Australians took the set. The second set was a mixture of spectacular play and bad errors, of which Henkel committed most. McGrath dropped his service at 4 —5, giving the Germans the set. The Australians led I—o in the third set, when heavy rain caused a short stoppage. Upon resuming McGrath settled down and wprried his opponents with back-hand passing shots. He also made many fine volleys from openings provided by Crawford. The Australians were leading 5—4, and Crawford was about to serve when the umpire discovered that new balls were overdue and should have been given in the seventh game. Play was held up a few minutes while the umpire consulted with the players and managers, then with the referee. The last-named decided that new balls should be used. This was to the advantage of Crawford, who won the service, to "fifteen," for set. Splendid smashing by McGrath gave Australia a 5—3 lead in the fourth set. McGrath then served and clinched the match with an ace. The match only occasionally touched lieiglits of skill. McGrath's splendid performance, after his nervous start, always had the Germans guessing. Crawford was steady throughout and won every service. Cranun was below form, and Henkel seemed shaken by several impetuous errors. Scores in the opening singles of the Davis Cup inter-zone final on Saturday: Cramni beat Quist, 4—6, C—4, 4—6, 6—4, 11 —9; Crawford beat Henkel, 6 —2, 6—2 (latter then retired). When Germany beat Australia in the European zone, third round, in June last year, the losers failed in all four singles. Results of the 1935 rubbers, which are being refought at Wimbledon this afternoon: Cramni beat Crawford, 6—3, 7—5, ; 6—2; Henkel beat McGrath, 4 —6, o—2,0 —2, 6—o, 6—2. In the British championship at Wimbledon last month Cramm beat Crawford in the quarter-finals, 6—l, 7 —5, 6 —4. McGrath had fallen in an earlier round to Bryan Grant (U.S.A.), 6—3, 6—4, 6—o.
