STREET COLLECTIONS.
ABOLITION ADVOCATED. "COMMUNITY CHEST" PLAN. A suggestion that a special committee should be set up to submit a scheme for the abolition of street collections and the substitution of a "municipal community chest." was advanced at a meeting of the Auckland City Council last evening by Sir George Richardson. The matter waa brought forward by way of a notice of motion by Sir George, who also asked that a return be rendered showing the several amounts collected by various associations in street collections during the year 1935, Sir George explained that his desire was to see if it were possible to introduce a more satisfactory and equitable system of helping- the; various social organisations of the city than by permitting them to hold street collections. They all appreciated the wonderful work which the organisations were doinjr and he advanced the idea of establishing a "municipal community chest" with a View to assisting them. The "chest sclicme, he said, originated in Amcrica and he thought Auckland might well give a lead in tho matter in New Zealand. He felt that business people and private individuals would be willing to add their quota to a fund, and perhaps the Government would be prepared to assist it by-way of an art union grant. The "community chest" scheme would remove the objectionable system in vogne at present under which women collectors had to beg in the street every month. * Miss E. Melville said she was sure that if the "community chest" system was explained to the public they would prefer it to the present street collections. The matter was I referred to the finance committee for consideration and a report. '
