UNION JACK VICTORY.
Reverse for De Valera Party In Dublin. MUNICIPAL ELECTION. (Received 2 p.m.) LONDON, July 2. The "Daily Telegraph" Dublin correspondent states that Mr. de Valera suffered a reverse in the Dublin municipal elections, which resulted in the Cosgrave party gaining 111 seats and the Fianna Fail 12. The latter lost one seat to the Cosgrave party. Independents won eight seats and Labour two. The Fianna Fail made desperate efforts to oust Alderman Byrne as Lord Mayor, whom they opposed most strongly because he was the only public man to travel from the Free State to attend King George's funeral. The election was for the first time fought 011 a political basis, the Government, in an effort to win, abolishing the commercial register and extending manhood franchise. Nevertheless, Mr. Byrne headed the poll with 14,207 votes in the first preference, the highest recorded in his area. All the Independents, except James Larkin, will support Mr. Byrne, who is assured of his seventh year in the mayoralty. Mr. Cosgrave declared that the result proved that the Government's popularity was waning. George Gilmore, a Republican, who was defeated, said it was a victory for the Union Jack.
