"HAD NO RIVAL."
CRIMINAL JUDGE. LATE SIR F. CHAPMAN. MEMORY HONOURED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. A declaration that as a criminal judge the late Sir Frederick Chapman had 110 rival, was mtfde by the acting-Chicf Justice, Sir John Reed, at a special session of the Supreme Court, at which the judiciary and the profession combined in a ceremony to honour Sir Frederick's memory. The acting-Chief Justice said that Sir Frederick was one of whom it could truly be said he was interested in everything that concerned or touched the lives of men. He was an accomplished linguist, he was deeply interested in scientific subjects, and his knowledge of astronomy, ethnology, botany and various branches of natural history was far beyond "the ordinary accomplishment of an amateur. He had a remarkable 'memory, which made him a most interesting conversationist. The Attorney-General, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, spoke for the Bar. He referred to Sir Frederick's varied and valued public services. He was> he said, a judge, of great experience and high talents, and he was thoroughly just and well loved. In no man's hands were the scales of justice more carefully poised. The profession of law, the system of. justice and the country in general had lost a distinguished man. .The president of the New Zealand Law Society, Mr. H. F. O'Leary, said that Sir Frederick could be looked upon as one of the last of the judicial dynasty which came to the Bench in the last years of the past century and the early years of the present one, and who left an imperishable record of their knowledge and learning in the law reports— worthy successors of the great men who had gone before them, and splendid examples for those who followed.
