BATTLE OF GIANTS.
Maier Engages Cramm in Fierce Duel at Wimbledon. MALFROY-STEDMAN IN FORM. (Received 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 26. Light rain overnight and in the forenoon delayed the start of play in the British lawn tennis championships, at Wimbledon. Next came a real battle of giants. The Spaniard, Maier, in the gayest and most daring mood, engaged Cramm in the fiercest of duels. The players' cannonball services and long range driving bombardment worked the crowd up to a high pitch of enthusiasm. The New Zealanders, Malfroy and Stedman (the latter's fingers heavily plastered), wore down .their English opponents in a steady match. Malfroy was especially severe with his smashing. He and Stedman were always more certain in the close-up volleying. The Sproule-McGrath match with Aeseliilman-Ellmer, was a very "gardenfete" engagement. Crawford and Quist were far too severe for their Chinese opponents. The Chinese often smiled their hopeless inability to cope with the Australians' angled shots.
