In the series of English county cricket matches, which began on Wednesday, Kent was defeated outright by Lancashire at Liverpool. Kent, however, still retains the lead, with Derbyshire and Notts close up. The outstanding individual feat was a century by B. Lilley, the Notts wicketkeeper, against Warwickshire, at Nottingham. Results and principal perfownances: — Middlesex: First innings, 317 (Hendren 100); second, 329 (Hulme 87 not out; Sinfield nine for 111). Gloucestershire: First innings, 249. Middlesex Avon on the first innings. Cambridge University: First innings. 35Q (Yardley 110 not out); second, four for 107. Surrey: First innings, 291 (Fishlock 128). The match was drawn. Worcestershire: First innings, 233 (Gibbons 99; Copson five for 34) ; second, 1G2.«- Derbyshire: First innings, 247 (Townsend 70); second, seven for 149 (Perks five for 03). Derbyshire won by three wickets. Kent: First innings, 104 (Fagg 71); second, 183. Lancashire: First innings, 131 (Freeman four for 41); second, eight for 218 (Watt six for 65). Lancashire won by two wickets. Notts: First innings, 435 (Hardstaff 121, Lilley 124). Warwickshire: First innings, 98 (Voce four for 42, Staples five for 13); follow-on, 236. Notts won by an innings and 101 runs.
Leicestershire: First innings, 62 (Boyes five for 12); second, nine for 334, declared (Berry 143). Hampshire: First innings, 140; second, five for 147. Hampshire won on the first innings.
Yorkshire: First innings, 392 (Barber 92, Verity 89). Somerset: First innings, 146 (Bowes five for 32); follow-on, 94 (Bowes four for 29). Yorkshire won by an innings and 152 runs.
Essex: First innings, 150 (Jupp six for 60); second, eight for 334. declared (Nicholas 101). Northamptonshire: First innings, 253 (Lamb 91 not out); second, five for 133. Northants won on tha first innings.
Sussex: First innings, 424 (Melville 142, H. Parks 159). Oxford University: First innings, 226; follow-on, 172. Sussex won by an innings and 26 runs.
