BAKERS' DISPUTE.

CLAIMS FOR AWARD FILED.

DAYLIGHT WORK SOUGHT.

A feature of the claims for a new award which were filed this week on behalf of bakers and pastrycooks in the Northern Industrial district, and the Wellington and Canterbury districts, is a provision for daylight baking. Daylight baking is done in certain .Australian States, but it has never been undertaken in the Dominion.

The clause covering the question which the workers are hoping to have included in the new award reads' as follows: —"The hour of starting work for bakehouse, workers, except doughmakers, shall be not earlier than 6 a.m. and the finishing time shall- not be later than 6 p.m." Under existing conditions there is a provision for a 4 a.m. start with 6d an hour extra for work before that hour.

Another new claim is that relieving workers required to live away from their homes shall be 'paid for board and lodgings, in addition, to being paid their fares to and from the job as at present.

A 40-hour week is also being sought, together with substantially increased wages. The minimum wages asked are as follows, with thoSe being ]jaid under the present award being given in parentheses: —Foreman baker or pastrycook, £6 (£5); journeyman baker or pastrycook, £5 10/ (£4 10/); doughmen, £G (£5) ; ovensmenj £6 ( —); bakehouse labourers and packers, £5 (£3 17/8). The employees also intend to demand the same 'wages for females as those paid to men, and double-time for overtime,' Sunday and holiday work.

The claims do not provide for workers in the Dunedin district who are now working under'an award which does not expire till next March, but it is stated that the employers are willing that their award shall be amended in the eyent of the Dominion award being arranged.
