AMALGAMATION PLAN.
BIRKENHEAD EXPECTATION. DRAINAGE WORK TO PROCEED. "I believe that this year's estimates will he the last brought down for the Borough of Birkenhead," said Mr. G. Mills, Mayor of the Borough, at a meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council last evening. "Before the end of the next financial year the amalgamation of the whole of the North Shore areas will have taken place. It is obvious that overlappiiig in the essential services is taking place, and the union would be in the interests of the whole area." Mr. Mills pointed out that local body reform was long overdue, and that fhe Government intended to take steps toward the merging of different areas. A letter, was received from the Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. W. E. Parry, relative to the amalgamation, and promising to make an inspction of the boroughs next time he vis'ted Auckland. A motion was adopted to take immediate steps toward a union with the neighbouring borough of Northeote. The council also decided to go ahead wi-.li the drainage scheme authorised by the ratepayers some months ago, and to call tenders for the sewage tanks and outfall in Chelsea Bay, and for the main sewer and reticulation. Permission was granted to the Auckland Hospital auxiliary and the St. •John ambulance to make street collections in the borough on Friday, July 31, and Friday. October 2, respectively. A vote of appreciation of the long public service of Mr. William Wallace was passed. Mr. Wallace was a member of the council for 20 years, and was three years as Mayor.
