STABLE AND TRACK NOTES
I Most of the Riccarton horses that are to race at the Dunedin meeting will go south to-morrow, but some of them will not leave until the night train.
SCHOOLED SPLENDIDLY. Soloist was given his first lesson over big country at Haweru on Tuesday (says our correspondent). He hesitated a bit at the first of the double, but cleared the remaining obstacles he was tried over in splendid style. These did not include the hencoop or the sodwall, but he is such a fine jumper that few fences should come amiss to him. NOT QUITE HIMSELF. Diamond,' who raced well at the Waikiito. and Great Northern- meetings, is stated to be feeling the effects of his recent efforts. In consequence he was not paid up for at the AVanganui meeting, but it is hoped to have him ready for the Wellington winter meeting, where, if at his best, he should again make a bold showing. »■. IN FIRST-RATE CONDITION. After being on the easy list for a brief period, Valspear is in regular work again at headquarters. This hack has no immediate engagements, but he is in solid racing condition, and if his owner eiected to take the gelding to some outside meetings more money' should come his way. As Valspear has not been over-raced a good future should be in store for him as a four-year-old next season. . WELL-BRED NOVICE. Black Frost, who claims an engagement in the Maiden Scurry at the Napier Park meeting on Saturday, showed promising form for a novice when Tte raced at Trentham last March/ He is a fine-looking three-year-old by Hunting Song _ from Sangfroid, bv Polvdamon from Sanguinary, the dam of Royal Blood. He is therefore bred on proved galloping lines. Black Frost is attached to G. W. B. Greenes stable at. Hastings. NEEDS EXPERIENCE. Souchong, who was a very speedy performer on the Hat, made his first appearance as a juniper at Hastings on Saturday, when he contested the Whakatu Hurdles. He did well for about a mile, when he hit a fence very hard, and from then on lie drifted. His schooling work previously had been satisfactory, and his jumping lias only got to improve for him to reach the winning list in this department. He is engaged at Napier Park oil Saturday and may do better. MADE GOOD SHOWING. Strome created a very favourable impression for a novice by his efforts over the big country at Hastings last week. In the June Steeplechase on the first day he was always in the picture and was third at the finish. On Saturday he went one better, ' Cotsfield being the only one to finish in front of him in the Hawke'B Bay Steeplechase. He is engaged in the Napier Steeplechase on Saturday, and with the experience he had at Hastings should prove one of the hardest to beat. PARTIAL TO HEAVY GOING. Nothing in the way of strenuous tasks have been required of Horowlienua, but the chestnut gelding is thriving on his work and has freshened up nicely during the last week or two. A proved galloper in heavy going, H. Rama should be able to place the Acre gelding to advantage before the winter season is over. One of Horowhenua's best performances last season was his victory in the Whyte Handicap at the Wellington winter meeting, and if taken to that fixture next month he will have plenty of friends. PROSPECTS APPEAR BRIGHT. The jumper Gascille has trained on well since the Great Northern meeting and has never been in better order than at present. There are few better jumpers than the Gasbag gelding, and as he has previously won over a three mile steeplechase course there will be plenty of races to suit him during the next couple of months. If present intentions are adhered to Gascille will be a competitor at the Wellington winter meeting next month, and he should have good prospects of winning a race at that fixture. A SURPRISE WIN. Trailer, the winner of the maiden race on the first day at Hastings, is a four-year-old chestnut gelding by Iractor, trained on the track by P.'Olsen at Greenmeadows. He had two thirds in similar class last April, one at Hastings and the other at Waipukurau, but he had run unplaced at the second Hastings autumn meeting, and his win last week was a surprise. Trailer is from Hine liohoro by Absurd from Hine Pango, by All Black. He is closely related on his dam s side to the Otaki winner Warehi. whose dam, Raukura, is a sister to Hine Hohoro. JUMPER REAPPEARS. v Kaokaoroa recently made his reappearance after a lengthy absence from the turf when he contested the two steeplechase events at the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's meeting last week. In the June Steeplechase on Thursday he was fourth, and occupied a similar position in the Hawke s Bay Steeplechase on Saturday. He is reported to have jumped splendidly in the latter event, but tired towards the finish. 4 couple of seasons ago Kaokaoroa was second in the Hunt Cup Steeplechase at the Grand National meeting at Riccarton and won the Aylesbury Hack Steeplechase on the concluding day of the same fixture. He is engaged in the Napier Park Steeplechase on Saturday and he is likely to be in the money.
