SENT TO GAOL.
SEAMAN IN DIFFICULTIES. THEFT OF OVERCOATS, i ' James Anthony Lynch, seaman, aged 32, for whom Mr. Aekins appeared, was chargcd in the Police Court this morning before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., with stealing an overcoat valued at £2 10/, the property of Alfred W. Bell, and on the same day, June 9, stealing- another overcoat, valued at £2. Sub-Inspector Fox said that the first overcoat was taken from a motor car. Constable J. J. Quirke made inquiries, and on the same day found the accused wearing the cOat. He had tried to pawn it. He then admitted having stoleh another overcoat and sold it for 4/. Accused had been drinking. He had given the constable every assistance in clearing the matter up. Mr. Aekins said that accused was a good worker, and only when drinking he committed the thefts. If he was given a chance he would go back to Whakatane to work, and he would be willing to take out a prohibition order. Mr. McKean: How can I give him a chance with his record. Apparently he is a sneak thief, although drink has evidently had a good deal to do with hie previous convictions. Accused was sentenced to two months' imprisonment on each of the charges, the sentences to be concurrent.
