LABOUR PARTY.
DEVONPORT WOMEN'S BRANCH ' There was a large attendance at th* women's branch of the Devonport Labour party on Tuesday afternoon when this recently formed branch held its fortnightly meeting. The p res : dent, Mrs. Potter, presided, and Sirs" W. .T. Lyon, wife of the Member for Waitemata, was present. The speaker of the afternoon was Mrs. Marion Hurstwho took for her subject "New Zealand Secondary Industries and Their Future Development." The by-products of the primary industries formed materials for secondary industries, said the speaker. She instanced the developments in dehydrating processes, very important from the housewife's point of view. ' The future of new manufacturing materials, such as casein, now a keystone of many modern industrial processes, and of pulped flax, from which beautiful rayon materials could be made were traced, and also the varied byproducts of the timber industry, for, by modern methods, nearly 00 per cent of a tree was used instead of under 30 per cent as formerly. The Devonport branch has moved into new ]arp;e rooms in Fleet Street, and is planning an active social and educative programme for building un a social centre through the branch.
