GESTURE TO JAPAN.
Australia Wants to Reopen Trade Negotiations. TARIFF CUTS AS INDUCEMENT. (Received 10 a.m.) CANBERRA, this day. As an inducement to Japan to reopen trade treaty negotiations ivith the Commonwealth, the Government 1 is prepared to transfer Japanese goods from the general tariff division to the intermediate. This would reduce the duty on Japanese-rayon from 9d to 8d a yard, and on cotton piece goods by id all round. Australia is also prepared to undertake to ensure that Japan retains at least half of her present textile trade, while facilities will also be afforded for Japan to steadily expand her Australian trade as a good customer country.
JAPANESE TERMS. • MUST REMOVE DUTIES. (Received 11 a.m.) TOKYO, June 16. Mr. Arita, Foreign Minister, is reported to have told Cabinet Ministers that resumption of trade negotiations with Australia is impossible unless Australia cancels the tariff increases against Japan.
JAPANESE INTEREST. SOUTH AFRICAN SHORT WOOLS. i (Received 12.30 p.m.) CAPETOWN, June 16. Japanese wool buyers at Port Elizabeth are unusually interested in short wools. A steamer is loading 3700 bales compared with 12 bales exported to Japan last June.
