GLUT OF SWEDES. DELICIOUS SLOW OF SALE. X ISLAND ORANGES ARRIVE. Apples and pairs were in fair demand at the city markets to-day, though Delicious apples were very slow of sale. The season for hothouse grapes is almost over and supplies are short, with values .high for good quality. Lemons are not I being sought, but large-sized New Zealand I grapefruit are in fair demand, small fruit I being hard to quit. There is only a I moderate inquiry for hothouse tomatoes. The second direct shipment of Cook Island oranges arrived yesterday by the Waipahi. The fruit was in fair condition and met a good demand. Quotations were:— Apples: Delicious, 3/ to 5/6 per cas'-; Bailarat, 5/ to 6/6: Dougherty, 3/ to 4 ij; Granny Smith, 6/ to 8/; Jonathan, •!,' to 7/; Munro, 4/ to 5/; Statesman, 5/t5 to (i/; Stunner. 4/6 to 6/. Pears: Packhams, 4/ to 4/6; Kcift'ers, 4/ to 5/6; P. Barry, 4/6 to 6/; Winter Coles and Winter Nelis, 5/6 to 8/. Tomatoes: Outdoor, extra choice, 5/ to 7/; others, 2/ to 4/; hothouse, 3d to 7d per lb. Tree tomatoes: New Black, 3/6 to 5/ per case; Yellow, 4/ to 5/. Oranges •' Cook Islands, repacked, 15/ to 21/, according to count. Grapefruit: New Zealand, extra choice, 7/ to 8/6; others, 3/6 to 6/; Californian, 32/6 per large case. Lemons: Choice cured, 8/ to !)/ per ease; others, 2/6 to 7/. Mandarins: Fiji, repacks, 21/ to 25/. Bananas: Ripe, 13/ to 18/. Grapes: Hothouse, Coleman, extra choice, 1/10 to 2/1 per lb: others, 1/4 to 1/9. Passion fruit: 8/ to 12/ per case. Guavas: 4/ to 5/6. Vegetables. The market was oversupplied with swedes, for which there was a very slow sale to-day. Poor quality onions were offered, but were very hard to quit. Cauliflower was still selling at high rates, and there was a fair demand for most vegetables in season. Selling rates were as follow: — Beet, 6d to 9d per dozen; celery, cooking, 6d to 1/ per bundle; dessert, 1/6 to 2/4; carrots, Od to lOd per dozen; cauliflowers, 0/ to 14/ per sack; on benches, 2/0 to 6/ per dozen; cabbages, 2/ to 6/ per sack; on benches, 1/ to 3/ per dozen; cucumbers, 5/6 to 7/6; French beans, 4/ to 15/8 per case; green peas, 8/ to 12/6; kumaras, 4/ to 7/9 per bag; leeks, 1/6 to 2/ per dozen; lettuce, 1/ to 0/9 per case; melons, 1/ to 2/6 each; onions. 2/6 to 4/ per bag; potatoes, Southern, 8/ to 8/6 per cwt; Ohakune, 4/6 to 6/ per bag; Brussels sprouts, 4 Mid to sMsd per lb; pumpkins, 3/ to 9/6 per bag; parsnips, 1/6 to 2/6 per dozen; radish, 3d to 4d; rhubarb, 3/ to 6/3; spinach, 9d to 1/; spring onions, 6d to 1/ per bundle; swedes, 1/ to 2/3 per bag; turnips, 3d to 6d per dozen. Poultry. At to-day's auctions the supply of poultry was medium and the demand was very keen for table birds. The prices paid show a poor demand for laying birds and higher values for table birds. Selling rates were as follow: —
Cockerels: Heavy breeds, prime, 4/ to G/3 each; not prime, 1/0 up; light breeds, prime, 3/ to 4/0; not prime, 1/0 up. Fat roosters: Heavy breeds, prime, 2/6 to 3/9; light breeds, 2/ to 3/. Fat hens : Heavy breeds. 3/ to 4/; light breeds, 2/0 to 3/6. Pullets: Heavy breeds, best, 3/ to 4/6; smaller, 1/0 up; liuht breeds, best, 3/ to 4 '0; smaller, 1/G up. Drakes: Young, prime, 2/9 to 3/3; smaller, 1/0 up; old, 1/0 to 2/6. Ducks: Young.. 2/6 to 3/6; old, 1/0 to 2/0. Guinea fowls: 2/0 to 3/0. Butter and Eggs. The only change in the price of eggs has occurred in the case of first grade hen, which were reduced Id per dozen yesterday. Other grades remain unchanged. Prices: —Hen eggs: First grade, 2/014 per dozen: B glade, 1/11%; C grade, 1/B',•£. Duck eggs: First grade. 1/11 % per dozen; li grade, l/IOVz; C grade, 1/8%. Farmers' butter, lid to 1/1 per lb.
