AKARANA OPEN FINALS

MISS O. STEVENS CHAMPION,

ROSKILL CUP TO MRS. NAISMITH.

Yesterday afternoon the final of the Akarana ladies' opfu golf championship was evenly contested, though Miss Olive Stevens obtained a useful lead of 2 up after the fifth hole. Both she and Mrs. E. L. Barker narrowly missed birdies at the next two holes. These were halved, and when Miss Stevens was trapped in the bunker and made a poor recovery. Mrs. Barker took the ninth and was 1 down. A weak chip cost Miss Stevens the first hole turning for home and Mrs. Barker got the lead for the first and only time at the next hole. Then Miss Stevens won two on end to become 1 up, j a poor hole in 6 following. At the fifteenth Mrs. Barker did not allow sufficiently for the slope of the green with her approach from the edge, whereas Miss Stevens chipped in from in front of the

.green to get a win in 4. Both got 3's at the next short hole and' a half in 5 at the seventeenth settled the issue in Miss Stevens' favour. Neither player was in good form and Mrs. Barker lost much of the effectiveness of her shots by over-swinging. In the Roskill Cup, Mrs. Naismith revealed a compact style and was too accurate for her opponent, Mrs. Bree.
