STRATEGIC ROAD.
Stronger Italian Hold on Austria-Hungary. GREAT NEW HIGHWAY. VIENNA, May 31. The President of Austria, Dr. Wilhelm Miklas, inaugurated an important strategic road which cuts from west to east through the Austrian Alps and rises to 4000 ft over the Pack Pass, after which it has been named. The road extends from Graz to Klagenfurt, a distance of 95 miles. It has been six years under construction, with the advice of Italian officers. The surface of the road is sufliciently strong to carry heavy artillery and the mountain curves are especially broad. Italy thus has increased her strategic influence on Austria and Hungary and indirectly on Yugoslavia as she possesses a direct connecting link with Hungary, the frontier of which is 180 miles from the Italian frontier • and now can be reached by mechanised units in less than five hours.
