RUMOURS DENIED.

j DISMISSALS OF STAFF. | "TEA PARTY" CONVERSATIONS. i v>' ' V. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) I NEW; PLYMOUTH, this day. ! Talk of wholesale dismissals by lead- • ing New Plymouth firms carrying large ! staffs has responsible for con-1 > siderable alarm. It was stated yesters one firm had discharged all its ; staff except the heads of departments, ■ and had later re-engaged them, appar- ; ently on better terms for the employers i in view of the legislative changes. A strong denial of the dismissals was given to-day by the executives of the ; firms whose names have been persistently mentioned in the rumours. "The rumours of dismissals of staff by New Plymouth firms have been gathering : Viorce, and will be detrimental to busiiiess," said one manager. "They are > totally unfounded, the only changes made being minor alterations customary for many years, and entirely unaffected by the legislation, ©ne store alleged to have put off several employees has dismissed only one in the past five years, although three girls recently resigned to take better positions. Another firm, stated to have dismissed 15 hands, reported that it had not dismissed any." "These rujnours are increasing over every tea party," he continued, "and some business people have been unfairly criticised, and certain organisations are even considering boycotting these stores on groundless information."
