NEW MEASURES.
IMPORTANT BILLS.
PROPOSALS BEFORE CAUCUS.
MORTGAGES AND RENTS
(By Telegraph.—Pnrlinintntary Reporter.)
WELLINGTON, this day.
Three important points in the Government's policy were dealt with at the caucus of Government members to-day. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, said that consideration had been given to a bill which would provide for the assumption of control of the Mortgage Corporation by the State. The Minister of Finance, who was in charge of the measure, had. given an outline of his proposals) aild these had been approved. The bill had not been finally drafted, and it would probably be Thursday before it would bij/ready for presentation to the House. Mr. Savage said that there would be a further bill dealing with the adjustment of mortgages, in the light of guaranteed prices and a revaluation of land values. "This problem is not an easy one," said Mr. Savage, "but it will have to be tackled. It may be necessary to guarantee the prices of other exportable primary products, but there is no need to deal with them while they are doing all right." The Prime Minister said that the Transport Licensing Amendment Bill had been approved by caucus, together with certain amendments, and the second reading debate would start tonight. The bill by which it was jiroposed to adjust rentals and to prevent the exploitation of tenants had been before caucus, and a committee of legal members had been set up to bring down proposals to a further caucus at 9.30 a.m. to-morrow.
