UNUSUAL DEATH.
FARM HAND SUFFOCATED. DRAGGED BY HAY RAKE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. The curious circumstances of a farm labourer's death were revealed at the inquest yesterday afternoon on Leslie Jacklin 'Hardgrave. whose body was found bv his employer beside a hay rake on a faim near New Plymouth on April 15. There were no external injuries, but indications, according to the evidence of Dr. G. H. Thomson, showed that Hardgrave had a fainting turn while driving the liny rake to gather fern. He apparently fell and was caught under the rake, which dragged him along underneath in soft earth, some of which lodged in his mouth and gullet, causing smTocation. Deceased's employer said that for the last few feet the rake appeared to have been deflected from its normal course on a steep slope down which he would not have thought of riding. Deceased had complained about his health, and the medical o\idence showed that his heart was not sound. , A verdict that Hardgrave was suffocated through falling in soft earth was returned.
